What is Depression?

Depression, also known as major depressive disorder or clinical depression, is a mood disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or emptiness. It is not simply a fleeting mood or occasional blues but rather a pervasive and long-lasting state of distress that can significantly impair daily functioning and quality of life.

Causes of Depression

The exact cause of depression is not fully understood and is likely to involve a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Certain life events, such as trauma, loss, or chronic stress, can trigger or contribute to the development of depression in susceptible individuals. Additionally, chemical imbalances in the brain, neurotransmitter dysfunction, and changes in brain structure and function may also play a role in the onset and progression of depression.

Symptoms of Depression

Depression can manifest in a variety of ways and may present differently from person to person. Common symptoms of depression include:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Difficulty sleeping or excessive sleeping
  • Fatigue or loss of energy
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Irritability or agitation
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

It's important to note that not everyone with depression will experience all of these symptoms, and symptoms may vary in severity and duration.
